About Notoxicom® B6000 and the Notoxicom® brand of polymeric flame-retardant materials

The development of Notoxicom® B6000, a polymeric FR PC/ABS material and the Notoxicom® brand of polymeric flame-retardant materials by Polymer Compounders, originated from a critical assessment of existing flame retardancy solutions. Despite their effectiveness in preventing fire-related fatalities, traditional flame-retardant polymers often contain harmful chemicals that pose significant health and environmental risks. This realization highlighted a fundamental flaw in the industry's approach to flame retardancy.

The idea for Notoxicom® B6000 emerged from our commitment to addressing these flaws and our determination to develop a safer, more sustainable alternative.

An increasing number of studies in recent years have shown that conventional flame-retardant polymers can leach toxic substances into the environment from their final molded form. These substances can also get into the human body through direct skin contact, causing cancer and endocrine disruption. Some recent examples include:

Motivated by these studies, we set out to create a flame-retardant material that would eliminate harmful chemicals while maintaining high fire safety standards.

Innovation

Notoxicom® B6000 is a material innovation that sets itself apart by not containing any halogenated and liquid Phosphate flame packages. The flame retardancy is effectively “baked in” at a molecular level rather than using additives. This unique feature allows it to achieve V0 and 5V status, ensuring both fire safety and environmental friendliness.

Results

Unlike traditional options that rely on toxic additives to achieve flame retardancy, Notoxicom® B6000 inherently achieves a V0 rating without the need for additional chemicals. This fundamental attribute not only ensures excellent fire protection, but also achieves comparable mechanical, heat, flow, and impact performance to existing products in the marketplace.

This type of polymer technology may also offer flexibility for further customization in the future by allowing the incorporation of other performance additives if desired by the end user.

Frequently Asked Questions about Flame Retardancy in Polymer

Why is bromine used in flame retardants?

Bromine is used in flame retardants because it inhibits vapor phase inhibition. The bromine atoms interrupt the chemical reactions that generate a flame. However, this reaction generates a toxic gas that is considerably more dangerous than the physical flame itself.

What are the dangers of bromine in flame retardants?

Unfortunately, 80% of fire-related deaths are caused by smoke inhalation. The bromine reaction within the flame retardant adds to the smoke buildup in the room, harming both fire safety teams and residents.

Are there safer alternatives available now?

Unfortunately, all current variations of commonly made FR ABS and FR PC/ABS Flame Retardants comprise halogen-based chemistry; Notoxicom® brand materials do not contain halogen-based chemistry and provide a viable solution.
